Born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Chad McLain grew up in a small community where football and baseball were an important part of his early life. He later attended Wofford College in upstate South Carolina, where he played baseball as a pitcher. His accomplishments on the field eventually earned him induction into the Wofford College Athletic Hall of Fame.

After earning his B.A. in Finance in 1991, McLain explored several professional paths. He taught high school, coached baseball, and worked for one of the world’s largest property and casualty insurance companies. These experiences gave him exposure to education, leadership, business, and the insurance industry long before he entered the legal profession.

A personal loss in the late 1990s became a major turning point. Following the sudden death of his mother, McLain reassessed the direction of his life and decided to pursue a legal career. He attended the University of Tulsa College of Law and earned his J.D. in 2001.

Building a Practice With a Clear Understanding of Insurance

Attorney McLain began practicing law in 2002 with Dan Graves. The professional relationship developed over the years, eventually leading the two attorneys to establish Graves McLain Injury Lawyers in 2010.

One of the defining aspects of McLain’s legal background is his previous work as an insurance claims specialist. Before representing injured individuals, he had experience seeing how insurance claims were evaluated and handled from within the industry. He is admitted to practice in Oklahoma state courts as well as several U.S. District Courts, including the Eastern, Northern, and Western Districts of Oklahoma. He is also admitted in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

His professional memberships include the Tulsa County Bar Association, Oklahoma Bar Association, Oklahoma Association for Justice, American Association for Justice, National Trial Lawyers, and Phi Delta Phi.

He has been named a Super Lawyer by Super Lawyers Magazine since 2011 and has been recognized among Oklahoma’s Top 50 since 2024. Earlier in his career, he was named a Rising Star from 2008 through 2010. He also received an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell in 2014 and earned a CALI Excellence Award in Insurance Law.

Beyond individual recognition, McLain has taken on leadership responsibilities within the legal community. He has served in various positions with the Tulsa County Bar Association and Tulsa County Bar Foundation, including committee leadership and work connected to the foundation’s capital campaign. His involvement reflects an interest in strengthening the professional legal community as well as serving individual clients.

McLain has also shared his knowledge through legal education programs. His speaking engagements have covered civil litigation, discovery and trial practice, auto injury litigation, and plaintiff’s personal injury law. These presentations have included programs organized by the National Business Institute and judicial forums.

A Continuing Commitment to the Tulsa Community

Community involvement has remained another important part of McLain’s professional life. He has served on the board of Tulsa Lawyers for Children and previously served as the organization’s president. The organization helps provide legal representation for children involved in deprived-child cases where the Public Defender’s Office has a conflict.

He has also served in leadership roles with the Summit Club and the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane Club. His current community work includes serving on the Board of Directors of the Tulsa American Heart Association and participating in its executive leadership.

In 2016, the firm launched a backpack drive that initially provided more than 300 backpacks to students at Jackson Elementary. The program has since expanded to provide more than 2,000 backpacks and school supplies to children in need across Tulsa.
