California DUI Lawyers Association
The California DUI Lawyers Association (CDLA) is the premiere organization for DUI Attorneys in California that are serious about DUI defense to be a member of. Unlike the National College of DUI Defense (NCDD), or the DUI Defense Lawyers Association (DUIDLA), both of which have a national DUI defense lawyer focus, the CDLA focuses exclusively on California DUI laws, and California defenses to a DUI.
The California DUI Lawyers Association also acts as an advocacy organization, speaking out against unfair DUI laws, providing evaluations and comments to the California legislature regarding proposed laws, and has taken worthy cases to the California Court of Appeal.
California DUI Lawyers Association (CDLA) History
The California DUI Lawyers Association was founded by California DUI specialist Edward Kuwatch, who was known as “Fast Eddie”. He was the author of the “California Drunk Driving” book, and created “Fast Eddie Publishing Company” to publish the book. The book is still in print, and is now is well known as the source for sharing information among DUI attorneys in California. It is currently published by James Publishing.
Ed Kuwatch created the organization he called the “California Deuce Defenders” (CDDD), after the most common term for a DUI, a “deuce”. (Deuce refers to the two charges (California Vehicle Code section 23152(a) and 23152(b), that are usually filed and alleged in a DUI case).
Kuwatch had a DUI defense law firm in Willits, California. He was well known, well liked, and a strong force for advancing education for DUI lawyers and advocating defenses for DUIs in California. He died in 2005.
The name of the organization he founded changed to the California DUI Lawyers Association a few years later.
California DUI Lawyers Association (CDLA) Membership
Membership in the CDLA is limited to those that commit to the goal of defending people that face drunk driving charges- often people that are going through the lowest times of their life, facing the court, and the DMV with a pending DUI charge. Being a member of the California DUI Lawyers Association, like being a member of the NCDD, is very much a sign of quality for a DUI lawyer in Orange County, or elsewhere – being a CDLA member shows commitment to the craft and to learning all about the field of DUI defense, testing, and strategy.
If you are an attorney thinking about learning about DUI defense, I highly recommend becoming a member of the CDLA. You can join the CDLA online, with membership dues from $65 to $200, depending on the level of membership. Membership is annual.

The CDLA lists educational events to keep DUI lawyers in California at the top of the cutting edge of DUI defenses. The seminars put on by the group are some of the best in California, with some DUI speakers that are well known in the DUI defense world.
