DMV COVID-19 Coronavirus updates as of April 3, 2020: One thing that hasn’t changed during the COVID-19 outbreak is that driving can be a critical need. The DMV Office of Driver Safety locations have been fully operational, handling hearings (telephonically) and issuing DMV set-asides, or mandatory suspensions after a hearing from a DUI.
UPDATED DMV PROCESS – DMV Field offices are temporarily closed to the public statewide. However, the Mandatory Actions Unit is fully functional and processing all SR22 certificates, Proof of Enrollments, and Ignition Interlock Device Installation certificates. Drivers can reinstate their licenses through the DMV without an appointment. Once the required documents are on file, drivers can pay any fees through the mail. After receiving payment, the DMV will mail the driver’s license back.

DUI PROGRAM ENROLLMENT – California has designated DUI treatment programs as an essential service, and most are open and continuing to enroll new clients. Many programs may require a new approach to stay open during the COVID-19 outbreak.
For example, when running small client groups isn’t feasible, many DUI programs are enrolling clients with a “Leave of Absence” status. That way, the program can continue to receive the necessary funds and allow clients to drive legally. You may or may not get credit for time post-enrollment in programs – you should check with the program upon enrollment to see how they are handling enrollment and classes. Some of the better programs are allowing virtual programs with credit.
What do I do if I have a due date with the DMV? You may have a due date to finish work to obtain a restricted license from a DUI, or you may have a pending date to pay fees to the DMV, or file documents (like an SR-22 or a proof of completion of classes) with them. The DMV is introducing kiosks on an emergency basis and are allowing some documents to be done through their website or through outside agencies. Make sure to check dmv.ca.gov for the most current information.
