What to Do in Case You Get Hurt Riding a Motorcycle
No rider wants to think about crashing, but accidents happen even to the most careful motorcyclists. When they do, time becomes critical. While emergency services typically arrive within about 9 minutes in most U.S. counties, areas where help takes 12 minutes or longer see crash fatality rates jump by nearly 50%. Calling a motorcycle accident lawyer like Jon Mani can help you understand what to do in those crucial moments after a crash and what steps to take to protect your rights. Knowing how to respond after an accident can make a difference in your recovery and your future. Here’s your step-by-step guide to handling a motorcycle accident.
Take the Right Steps at the Scene
Your first priority is safety. If you’re conscious and able to move, get yourself and your bike out of traffic if possible. However, even minor-looking injuries can be serious, so avoid moving if you suspect spinal damage.
Make people aware of your presence in the road with hazard lights or reflective triangles.
Call 911 immediately. Every minute counts when it comes to getting proper medical attention. While waiting for help, check yourself for injuries. Look for obvious signs like bleeding, broken bones, or difficulty moving.
If other people are involved, check on them too, but don’t attempt to move anyone who might have serious injuries.
Protect Yourself Legally and Financially
Once emergency responders arrive and you’ve received initial medical attention, start thinking about documentation. Take photos of the scene, your bike, any other vehicles involved, and your injuries if visible. Get contact information from witnesses and the other driver, along with their insurance details.
File a police report, even for seemingly minor accidents. This official documentation will be crucial for insurance claims and any potential legal proceedings. Be honest about what happened, but don’t admit fault or speculate about the causes of the accident.
Consider contacting a motorcycle accident lawyer, especially if you’ve suffered significant injuries or if fault is disputed. Motorcycle accident cases can be complex, and having legal representation early can protect your rights and help you navigate insurance negotiations.
Understand Your Insurance Coverage Gaps
Here’s a harsh reality many riders discover too late: when motorcyclists end up in hospitals or emergency rooms after crashes, more than half find their commercial insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of treatment. This means you could be facing crushing medical bills even with what you thought was good coverage. Before you ride, review your policy carefully and consider gap insurance or additional medical coverage to protect yourself financially.
Prevention Saves Lives
While we’re focusing on post-accident steps, some prevention facts are worth remembering. Your helmet choice could be the difference between life and death, and the statistics are stark when comparing states with mandatory helmet laws versus those without them. In states that don’t require all riders to wear helmets, 51% of those killed in crashes weren’t wearing one, while states with universal helmet requirements see that number drop to just one in ten fatalities.
Time of day matters too. Nighttime riding carries additional risks, particularly when alcohol is involved. Riders killed in evening and overnight crashes are more than twice as likely to have been drinking compared to those in daytime accidents, with impairment rates reaching troubling levels after dark. So, it goes without saying that you should never drink and ride.
Seeking help, whether medical, legal, or emotional, isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s smart preparation that can make your recovery smoother and more complete.
